Swedish Massage is often referred to as relaxation massage,
it is a gentle relaxing massage involving techniques to sooth the nervous system,
relieve muscular aches and revitalize the body. Long, flowing strokes called
effleurage are used alternately with kneading of the muscles, tapotement or
percussion type movements and some gentle mobilization of joints.
Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to
massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding),petrisagge
(kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber)and
vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain,
joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with joint troubles. It has
also been shown to be helpful in individuals with poor circulation. Swedish
Massage is perfect for promoting relaxation and the fine tuning of the body
& mind
Swedish Massage reduces stress, both emotional and physical,
and is suggested as part of a regular program for stress management and for
those that suffer high levels of anxiety or insomnia. If you want more intensive
work and firmer pressure, ask for a deep tissue massage or to incorporate
trigger point therapy into your Swedish massage.
Swedish Massage increases the oxygen flow in the blood in the
direction of the heart and releases toxins from the muscles. It affects the
nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and
well-being.
Athletes often seek light pressure Swedish style massages to
prepare their muscles before an intense workout. Following a major sporting
event, competitors often receive a massage to cleanse their body systems of toxins
that accumulate during heavy exertion.
Swedish massage reduces muscle tension and
prevents the soreness that often follows in the day two after a workout. For
people who have injuries, therapeutic massage relieves pain and speeds up the
healing process, by improving blood circulation, removing toxins and relaxing
muscle spasms in the affected area.
While it has been known by wellness and holistic practitioners
for many years, the medical field is starting to recognize that we can't
effectively treat the body as simply a group of separate parts. By using
therapies such as Swedish techniques, we can treat the whole person and their
body systems and complement traditional medical approaches. This holistic
strategy allows us to improve people's overall health and well-being, whether
their concerns are physical, mental or emotional, or a combination of these.
Contraindications
Application of pressure is contraindicated directly over
sites of acute, active and ongoing infection and inflammation. Recent unhealed
fractures, acute gout, phlebitis, and unhealed wounds contraindicate massage.
