CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, noninvasive form of manual therapy that deals with the movement of the Cerebral spinal fluid surrounding the skull and spine. Craniosacral therapists ease the restrictions on nerve passages by focusing on the membranes and tissue that encase the central nervous system and spinal cord. Craniosacral therapy seeks to restore misaligned cranial bones to their proper position. The practitioner gently works with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia. In this way, the restrictions of nerve passages are said to be eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spinal cord is said to be optimized, and misaligned bones are said to be restored to their proper position.

One method of Craniosacral Therapy, is a ten-step protocol which serves as a general guideline, and includes analyzing the base (existing) cranial rhythm, creating a still point in that rhythm at the base of the skull, rocking the sacrum, lengthening the spine in the lumbar-sacral region, addressing the pelvic, respiratory and thoracic diaphragms, releasing the hyoid bone in the throat, and addressing each one of the cranial bones. The practitioner may use discretion in using which steps are suitable for each client, and may or may not follow them in sequential order, with time restraints and the extent of trauma being factors.

Therapists can use CST to treat and assist with healing in a myriad of conditions such as neck and back pain, migraines, TMJ Syndrome, digestive problems, depression, high or low blood pressure and for chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia.

Because this is a non-intrusive treatment children including babies can be treated using this technique so as to obtain maximum results prior to reaching adolescence.

Clients often report a sense of deep relaxation during and after the treatment session, and may feel light-headed. This is popularly associated with increases in endorphins, but research shows the effects may actually be brought about by the endocannabinoid system (a group of neuromodulatorylipids and their receptors that are involved in a variety of physiologicalprocesses including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory).
